It was a milestone weekend on Steam, propelled in part by the runaway success of Monster Hunter Wilds. Valve’s popular platform hit over 40 million concurrent users for the first time on Sunday, as Capcom’s latest action-adventure title surged to become Steam’s fifth-biggest game of all time for peak concurrent players.

Monster Hunter Wilds Enters the Record Books

Launched on February 28, Monster Hunter Wilds amassed 1,384,608 concurrent players on Saturday, according to SteamDB. That tally places the new entry behind only PUBG, Black Myth: Wukong, Palworld, and Counter-Strike 2 in Steam’s all-time rankings. The achievement also dwarfs the previous high-water mark for the Monster Hunter series: Monster Hunter World, which peaked at around 300,000 concurrent players—though that game did not launch on PC and console simultaneously.

Steam’s Historic Weekend

  • 40 Million Online: Valve’s platform reached a staggering peak of 40,263,524 concurrent users on Sunday, setting a new record for total players online.
  • Wilds vs. Other Heavyweights: On its release day, Monster Hunter Wilds outpaced both Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of concurrent players—an impressive feat for a brand-new launch.

Performance Concerns and Mixed Reviews

Despite the strong start, some PC users reported technical issues, leading to mixed reviews for Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam. Still, the series remains one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, second only to Resident Evil in total sales.
