Capcom’s latest installment in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Wilds, has shattered the publisher’s own records by selling 8 million copies in its first three days—making it Capcom’s fastest-selling title to date. According to series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, a major contributor to this success is the game’s increased focus on story, which he says has helped immerse players more deeply in the world of Monster Hunter.
In an interview with The Nikkei, Tsujimoto explained that Capcom “placed emphasis on the story and increased the immersive feeling with the voice actors’ voices,” ensuring players “get a feel for the world of Monster Hunter.” While some longtime fans have criticized certain narrative elements for feeling too “on-rails,” many players have praised the game’s characters—particularly Rove and Gemma—and the way Wilds builds up to its grand Low Rank finale.
Tsujimoto also highlighted cross-platform support as another key reason behind Wilds’ record-breaking performance. Not only did the game launch on PC and consoles simultaneously for the first time in the series, but crossplay enabled a wider player base to team up from different devices—crucial for a co-op-driven experience like Monster Hunter.
Though opinions on the new story direction may vary, Monster Hunter Wilds has proven Capcom’s gamble paid off. With a bigger audience and shared gameplay experiences across platforms, it seems clear that the bold new steps Wilds takes have resonated with hunters worldwide—and the sales numbers back it up.
