Square Enix has announced a major milestone for its flagship Final Fantasy franchise, revealing that the series has now sold over 200 million copies worldwide since its debut 37 years ago. This impressive figure spans 16 numbered mainline entries (22 if you count direct sequels and the Final Fantasy 7 remakes) and a vast range of spinoffs, including mobile titles, tactical games, rhythm-based offshoots, and more.
Pixel Remaster Success
The publisher also confirmed that the recently launched Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster “series” has surpassed 5 million units sold. These remasters of the first six Final Fantasy titles have been rolling out on PC, mobile, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. Each game can be purchased separately or as part of a bundle, and a new patch released today addresses various bugs while adding an accessibility option for Final Fantasy 3 to adjust job-level progression rates.
A Broader JRPG Revival
With turn-based JRPGs once considered an endangered subgenre, the Pixel Remaster’s success suggests a growing appetite for classic-style role-playing games. Indeed, the collection appears to have outpaced the more visually extravagant Final Fantasy 16, which launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 in June and reportedly sold 3.5 million copies. Multi-platform accessibility is believed to be a factor in the Pixel Remaster’s strong performance.
A Legendary Legacy
By surpassing 200 million total sales, Final Fantasy joins an elite group of only a handful of global franchises—alongside Mario, Pokémon, Call of Duty, FIFA, and others—that boast such impressive lifetime numbers. With additional projects on the horizon, Square Enix will likely continue building on Final Fantasy’s storied history for years to come.
