Rumors continue to swirl around the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, and according to a new Bloomberg report, analysts believe the upcoming system will come with a significantly higher price tag than its predecessor. Some forecasts peg the new console’s launch price at $400 or more, potentially climbing to $499, making it the priciest Nintendo console in history.
Why the Switch 2 Could Cost More
A key factor behind this steep price jump is the increased cost of manufacturing, especially regarding the Switch 2’s new processor. According to Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda, the original Switch chip is estimated at around $80 per unit, while the new chip for the Switch 2 could climb to $130-$150.
With additional variables such as US tariffs in the mix, many analysts suggest the entry-level Switch 2 could cost anywhere from $399 to $449, or even $499 if Nintendo decides to absorb fewer production expenses. In comparison, the original Switch launched at $299 in 2017, which amounts to roughly $388 today when adjusted for inflation.
Biggest Launch in Gaming History?
Despite the higher price point, analysts are unanimous in predicting a massive debut for Nintendo’s new console—potentially the biggest in video game history. Robin Zhu, from investment firm Sanford C. Bernstein, expects the Switch 2 to land in June with a first-day inventory of 6 to 8 million units, easily surpassing early sales for current record-holders like the PlayStation 5.
Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based industry analyst, remains confident that fans will buy the console “almost regardless of the price,” thanks largely to Nintendo’s strong first-year lineup. Titles rumored for launch or early release include a new Mario Kart, a 3D Mario sequel, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4. Third-party giants—such as Call of Duty—could also arrive on day one, potentially broadening the Switch 2’s appeal well beyond Nintendo loyalists.
An Ambitious Sales Target
With predictions of up to 20 million units sold in the first year alone, the Switch 2 looks poised to challenge—and potentially surpass—both the original Switch’s strong opening and even Sony’s record-breaking PlayStation launches. Analysts argue that Nintendo has carefully set the stage for a grand entrance, combining powerful new hardware with recognizable franchises and robust third-party support.
