Hello Games has released a major free update for No Man’s Sky, titled Relics, which introduces a new focus on paleontological discoveries and gives players another compelling reason to burrow beneath alien landscapes.

Fossil Excavation
In No Man’s Sky, you can now unearth ancient skeletal remains of long-extinct creatures. Each fossil varies in rarity, so you never quite know what your next dig will unearth. Hello Games notes that the most valuable finds might awaken “dangerous creatures” resembling stone golems, forcing you to either fight or flee if you want to keep your prized bones.

Build Your Own Skeleton
Unearthed fossils can be pieced together in your base to create anything from legitimate reconstructions to weird mismatched monstrosities. Skulls, torsos, legs, and tails can be mixed and matched at will, letting creative explorers assemble the bizarre alien skeleton of their dreams—or nightmares.

New Fossil Vendor
A specialist vendor is also arriving at Space Stations, enabling you to trade in your fossils, pick up any rare bones you’re missing, or barter for the perfect piece to complete your next unusual skeletal centerpiece.

Community Expedition and More
To coincide with the Relics update, Hello Games is planning a new community expedition in which players are tasked with uncovering especially rare fossils. The update is live right now across all platforms.
